The sprawl prevails...

Why has no one ever made a cultural map of Los Angeles? Well, we are finding out the hard way here at ForYourArt, as we try to make just that. Mapping and chronicling the heterogeneous arts landscape of L.A. is a monumental task, even when you are only culling the top ten percent. There are art galleries tucked away in residential homes, site-specific installations half way to the desert, performances in both Long Beach and Valencia on the same night...the contradictions and cross-overs are myriad and maddening.

Instead of excluding potentially vital spaces, we have made every effort to include that which we find inspiring and culturally relevant to our vision of the city. Greater L.A. comprises areas that are outside the geographical purview of our neighborhood listings but not beyond our frame of cultural importance.
