A video sneak peek of Side Street Projects' Bookmeat

Bookmeat Silent Auction, November 21, 6–10pm

Side Street Projects' upcoming silent auction, Bookmeat (a reference to the best part of a book), offers a unique insight into the creative minds of some of the most notable writers, artists and curators in Los Angeles and beyond, including curator Hans Ulrich Obrist, 2009 MacAurthur Fellow Mark Bradford and 2008 Whitney Biennial artists Edgar Arceneaux, Ry Rocklen, Rodney McMillian, James Welling, Walead Beshty, Fritz Haeg, Alice Könitz and Mario Ybarra, Jr. Each participant has parted with a personally influential book. Inside, there is a secret inscription left for only the buyer’s eyes.

Proceeds from the November 21st auction will benefit Side Street’s programs, which provide arts education opportunities for children, along with financial and practical support for emerging artists. Side Street is offering a 20% discount on tickets to ForYourArt readers – click here for details.

Here is a sneak peek from Side Street Projects of a few contributed books by Andrea Bowers, Mark Steven Greenfield and Carmen Argote, presented by Side Street's Joe Lapointe:

Andrea Bowers

Andrea Bowers donated an enhanced version of the Earth First Direct Action Manual. Andrea’s work for the past 5 years or so has investigated the strategic use of both violence & non-violence in civil disobedience.

Mark Steven Greenfield

Did you know that Mark has the most beautiful handwriting we’ve ever seen? You’ve got to see it to believe it… it’s like 18th century penmanship. Crazy. Mark contributed a copy of Black Like You, a history of blackface & whiteface in American history. Included is a hand-written note by Mark with beautiful doodle drawings in the margins. We love you, Mark… thanks!

Carmen Argote

We’re blown away by Carmen’s amazing & hand-made book: full of portraits she did of characters whilst watching the Lord of the Rings trilogy! Holy fan art, Batman! Life and art intertwined — a day of watching movies beautifully recorded by Carmen for Bookmeat.
